Eastern Hermann’s (Testudo hermanni boettgeri) are the most readily available of the Hermann’s tortoises. They are quite different from the western subspecies and a lot more variable in size and coloration. The main difference is the lack of the subocular yellow spot on their cheek. Eastern Hermann’s also lack a central black marking on the fourth vertebral scute of the carapace, which is typically always present on the western subspecies. The color of their carapace is an attractive black and yellow with black/tan/straw skin pigmentation. Hatchlings will have darker skin pigment, which will lighten with age. They also have a faint yellow subocular patch (not spot) on their check, which usually goes away as they grow. Their natural population inhabits Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Turkey and Greece. They range from 7” to 9″ for females and 5.5” to 7″ for males. Being readily available, highly robust and extremely personable, makes them a great tortoise to own.

When I saw Randy’s posting in an online classified, I knew right away that I wanted to have one of his tortoises. A sweet little 6 mo old Hermann’s came to me just a few days later. I am not only pleased with how well started she is. She was indeed beautifully cared for and that was easy to see right from the start. But here’s the big deal for me: the support Randy has provided through this whole process. As he mentioned, “a tortoise is a big commitment and you should have the one you want.” He sent videos and pics of all the babies and I did indeed choose the one I wanted. Getting her here was a breeze. Randy took care of the shipping arrangements and kept me up to date with all of the details. He wanted to know when she arrived. And he wanted to make sure I gave her a good soak when she arrived.
When my little tort did not eat immediately, I wasn’t concerned. I soaked her a few times that first day. A day or two went by, though, and she still didn’t want to eat, preferring instead to hide. I was in touch with Randy to let him know and he was extremely helpful. He asked for pics of my setup and encouraged me to continue to be patient with her. He shared a few “tricks” to get her started and they worked! She began eating, basking, exploring, I’m grateful for Randy’s care ethic, his knowledge, and his interest in my tortoise’s well being. This is the reason I chose to work with him and I’m very glad I did!

If I could give the “Tort Stork” 10 stars I would! Randy was timely with his communication, allowed us to choose which tortoise we wanted, worked with our schedules to identify the best day for the stork to deliver our new baby, and followed up not just to make sure we received our sweet girl alright, but several days later to make sure things were still going well. TorkStork had no idea my daughter was on crutches at the time and will be using the book for personal inspiration and to read it to others needing encouragement. Jerry has brought us so much joy and now my husband is out of bed everyday to check on him, ensure his is doing ok. It’s been about five days since we adopted little Jerry. He is going strong, eating well and bringing smiles all around. Even big brother display him to his virtual friends during virtual learning while online school. I searched for weeks for a good, trustworthy website to purchase a tortoise from. I accidentally stumbled across Tortstork (I believe) from a random “unboxing” video on YouTube. I liked the reviews, and the webpages for the company. (Randy, the owners posts on his group fb page we’re what really sold me. It became clear that he’s honest, and cares about his turtles- and the customers.) So I went for it! Almost immediately I received a personal email from the owner himself, thanking me etc. He mailed it out right when he said he would- and it came the following day. I even received a text from the owner letting me know he checked it’s status, and that it was in my town, and to please text him when my package arrived. Turtle arrived safely, and happy. Owner Randy Betz wins the lifetime achievement Oscar for best, proactive customer service. Bad winter weather caused would have caused delays. Randy contacted me and told me he was going to wait for shipping times to improve before sending the turtle. When the new shipping was delayed, he contacted me right away to tell me that the turtle would be OK but it would arrive one day later. He contacted me before FedEx could do it automatically. We had been thinking about getting a tortoise for almost a year (so much research!). Once we decided on a Hermann’s, we started looking into captive bred only breeders. We found quite a few, but when researching them, we read many (many) bad/disappointing reviews when googling the reputation of the various companies. We found Tortstork recommended in a tortoise forum and couldn’t find one negative experience reported. It was so important to us to find a responsible, knowledgeable, and caring person. I am in the veterinary profession, so am probably overly critical and very careful when it comes to breeders.
From day one, Randy was very responsive, and answered all of my many emails. We very much appreciated his clear instructions and care sheets linked on his website as well. He sent pictures of all his available hatchlings, and we got pick out our new family member! He then sent extra pictures of the one we selected, which we really appreciated.
Once we were all set up (husbandry-wise), he sent ‘Bear Greens’ FedEx priority overnight, which I did have a lot of anxiety about. Randy was so understanding about all of my worries, and put my mind at ease. Bear Greens arrived, without any delays, by noon the next day. He was ‘packaged’ very securely, and was cozy and warm. We soaked him right away (per included care sheet), then moved him to his tortoise table. He was very active, explored everything, and then ate a lot!
Thank you so so much for making this (first) experience as stress free and easy on all of us (tortoise included!). We are so thankful to have found you! We really could not have imagined a better outcome, and are head-over heels in love with our little guy. Our son is already talking about another 😅.
