I get a lot of questions about how often a baby tortoise should be soaked, and my response is always daily. The most common reason baby tortoises get sick is dehydration. Soaking daily hydrates them, and in some cases, hyper-hydrates them. The advantage of soaking daily allows you some cushion days when you’re super busy. […]
A happy tortoise is a tortoise with a routine. Tortoises like to predict their next move. They like to wake up around the same time, eat the same time, walk their walk, and sleep. In the wild they do this. In captivity, its the owners responsibility to create a routine. Have your lights on a […]
I am heartbroken to announce that Helix passed away on January 16th, 2020 from respiratory issues. That morning he went through his normal routine, a soak for five minutes, his favorite orange wheels were put on, and he was offered some food. For the first time, he didn’t get excited. Instead he rolled into his […]
Some of our baby Egyptian eggs are starting to hatch. I was hoping these would be instahatch eggs and hatch in some lucky person’s incubator. This Egyptian egg was laid on 5/9/19. It piped on 7/31/19 and slowly is emerging at a tortoise’s pace. This little tortoise weighs around 4 grams.
Instahatch egg #83 was laid on 4/6/19, shipped to Tulsa, Oklahoma on 6/3/19, delivered on 6/4/19 and started to hatch on 6/22/19. 18 days after delivery. Talk about a stressful few weeks. I was confident that it was going to hatch because the customer kept sending me updates of candling pictures and it was progressing […]
#86 is a Marginated tortoise. It was laid 4/17/19, shipped to Albany, California on 6/17/19 (2,490 miles away), delivered on 6/18/19, and hatched on 6/20/19. It was so full of energy it climbed out of its deli cup!!!!!!
This cherry head tortoise decided to pip way too early. As it was hatching I noticed something was strange about its yolk sac. The tortoise had Gastroschisis; where the intestines are outside the body. For what ever reason, this little cherry head didn’t fully develop properly. It is currently alive, moving its head and is […]
#71 and #72 were both Cherryhead tortoise eggs, from same clutch, same ship date, same delivery date. They both traveled around 600 miles. #71 was shipped to Soddy Daisy, Tennessee. #72 was shipped to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. #71 piped 7 days after being delivered (total days incubated 101). #72 piped 16 days after being delivered […]
